I don’t know about you but I am counting down the days to summer! I am ready for my kids to be done with school and finish their after-school activities. I am exhausted from all the driving around, homework, tests and projects! May is always a very busy month with end of the year shows, awards and parties at school.
I am looking forward to the lazy days of summer and being able to sit back, relax and unwind. Summer is a great time to slow things down and it is a great time de-stress.
Here are some of my favorite tips to de-stress in the summer!
Take a Break and Grab Some Alone Time
This may sound simple but I know that many Moms forget to do this simple thing! You are so busy taking care of your family that you forget to leave time for yourself. Even getting away for a few minutes can really help you calm your mind. Close your eyes, listen to relaxing music or just breathe can help immensely.
Spend Time Near Water
I am lucky to live in Florida so we have water all around us. If you have a pool, just spend 30 minutes outside, soaking in the sun, and getting in the pool can be reduce stress. You can feel the tension slip away, as your muscles and body relaxes in the cool water. Or take a drive to the beach and go for a walk. Feel the sand beneath your toes, feel the salty water on your skin or just watch the waves float in and out. Being mindful and present in the moment is important and being able to really feel the sights, and sounds of the ocean is a beautiful way to relax.
Having a healthy diet is a good stress fighter. Foods that contain anti-oxidants, omega-3 fatty acids and folate can all help with stress. Foods such as kale, grapefruit, sunflower seeds, almonds can promote better health. Also, there are so many delicious fruits and vegetables available in the summer, like peaches, and mangoes. Eat the rainbow as they say, fill your plate with vegetables and fruits. You will feel energized and your body will thank you.
Get More Sleep
One of my favorite things about summer is that we don’t have to turn on the dreaded alarm for 7am to get up for school! So go ahead and snooze for an hour or more. Your body needs rest to replenish and restore energy. It is recommended that we get at least 7-8 hours a night so the summer is an easy time to get those hours for your body and your brain.
You may be wondering what laughing has to do with stress. You may also be thinking you don’t have time for entertainment with your busy schedule. But, research does show the laughing can reduce tension created by stress! So, go ahead, and take some time to have fun with your kids and laugh until your stomach hurts!
As you can see, there are easy ways to de-stress in the summer. And the best thing is that these simple ways don’t cost money! I hope you will take some of these tips or all of them and apply them this summer because you deserve a break! Enjoy your summer!
