The Heart Connection Center in Boca Raton, Florida is dedicated to helping you restore and heal yourself and your relationships through healthy connections. Three words: Connect, connect, and connect can increase the quality and effectiveness of your child’s therapeutic process. You can connect with your therapist. You can connect with your child and you can connect your therapist with the systems in your child’s school, their doctors, and their social circle. Here I will discuss the various ways you can be involved with your child’s therapy by connecting in these three areas. Child/Teen counseling in Boca Raton can be very effective if you, as the parent, can assist in these connections.
- CONNECT with the therapist– Physically being a part of your child’s therapy is paramount to your child’s therapeutic success. Although there may be times that the therapist requires to meet with the child on an individual basis, it is important for you as the parent, to maintain a certain level of collaboration with the therapist. One way to create collaboration is by being on the same page regarding the reason your child is in therapy; create a clear definition of the problem and desired goals to be reached. For example, your therapist may design a behavior chart that incorporates objectives to be worked towards on a weekly basis. You can touch base with the therapist in the beginning of session and at the end of the session for a few minutes in order to discuss the treatment process and to provide relevant information that occurred during the week that can be used in sessions. Connecting with the therapist and being a part of the therapeutic sessions can also provide you with the opportunity to be involved in his/her steps towards success. This will help you learn the tools you need to continue the same steps towards success after the therapeutic treatment is complete.
- CONNECT with your child- Sometimes, as parents you may want to connect with your child, especially during challenging times or growing pains. You may want to help them, but do not know how. Everything you have tried has failed and possibly your attempts to communicate with them has made them more resistant towards you. Learning to speak your child`s language and trying to enter their world can help you meet them where they are. Listening to your child`s story and validating their feelings can also help your child become less resistant and defensive, thus creating a healthier connection between you and your child. Make it a point to connect with your child on a daily basis even if it’s only for 10 minutes during a car/drive home or over dinner. The more connected you are to your child during the week, the more connected you will be to them through the therapeutic process and throughout their life.
- CONNECT the therapist with the systems surrounding your child. There are larger systems that are involved in your child`s life, such as the school, their physicians, their social circle and in many cases other counselors or mentors. Try to identify the systems and the people in your child`s life that could be included in your child`s therapy. Let the therapist know who they are. They too can be included in the collaboration process and communication with them may offer valuable insight to your child’s behavior to your therapist. This form of connection can also maintain the support your child may need when they are discharged from therapy and increase the quality of continued care.
